Kristal Lyndriette: A New Beginning
by Jacqueline Jones
November 17, 2013
Kristal Lyndriette, what can I say about this R&B singer? She is a beautiful, talented and humble person. After talking to her this past week, I am so intrigued by her story and how she got her start in the music industry. Kristal is that down home Sista with a slight country accent that you can't help but love when you first meet her. She was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, and raised in Gastonia, North Carolina. Kristal has always had a love for music and she was surrounded by music from an early age. Her father is a bass player and mother, aunt, and uncle are all singers. When asked how soon she realized she wanted to sing she said, "I have been singing all my life. The moment I realized I wanted to sing professionally was about the age of eleven." She then went on to say that she sang in the church and school choirs.
At the age of sixteen Kristal was signed to Rich Harrison's label Richcraft, and Jive Records in 2007. Rich Harrison helped formed the R&B female group RichGirl which included Lydriette and three other members. The group worked together from 2007 to 2011 and released their self title debut album in 2009 and a mixtape titled "Fall in love with RichGirl" which was released in 2011. The group was based out of Atlanta where all the members lived together. After the group disbanded Lyndriette fell into a depression for two years and admits that she had to take on a regular job in her hometown. Lydriette said that during the depression she listened to her favorite singer Brandy. Whose music she says,"bought me out of a lot of dark places". She mentioned that she believed God gave her that two years of down time to find out who "Kristal really is". She pulled through the depression with the help of her family and friends.
Krystal Lyndriette is now signed to Voltron Recordz. She is actually the first artist signed to singer/actor/author Tyrese Gibson's label. When I asked her how she felt about being the first lady of Voltron Recordz she stated "I am super excited to be the first lady and just the fact that Tyrese chose me when he could have chosen any other artist is an honor". Tyrese and Kristal both shared the same manager, Greg Parks and have known each other for a long time. They have both been like a mentor to Kristal. Tyrese said that, "I believe Kristal will be bigger than me and sell out arenas". Tyrese also admits that he still does not know alot about Kristal because she is a private person, "I know as much as I need to know about her. She has a bit of mystisque on her which is good because you have some people that are like an open book". When she was going through her depression Tyrese says it was if people left her for dead and for her to pull through it all is inspiring. Gibson also mentioned that he is not looking to sign any other artist to his label because he wants to focus solely on Kristal's career right now and goes on to say that she will not just be singing but will be acting in movies, landing endorsements and will even start a clothing line.
Tyrese is currently working on a documentary about Kristal outside of the music world. The documentary is called "Journey" and will depict Kristal's life as well as one of her family members who is incarcerated. More details will follow on the documentary. In the meantime Kristal just released her single "Silhouette" which was not due to be released with her debut album until 2014. "Silhouette" is already getting airplay on radio stations across the country. Kristal also made her red carpet debut at the Soul Train Music Awards last weekend and was accompanied by Tyrese and other members of the Voltron Recordz family. You can see Kristal make her acting debut in the film "Fast and Furious 7" in theaters this summer!
I have to say that is was an honor and pleasure to meet this R&B sensation and I look forward to following her throughout her new journey! ~
